Henna Brows: Tips and Experiences from a Stylist

As a professional, you are always looking for new ways to make your clients shine. One of the most exciting trends in the world of eyebrow care is the use of henna dye. In this article, we share the benefits, tips, and experiences from beauty specialist Sydne on using henna for brows.

What are the benefits of henna eyebrow dye?

Ease and Durability

"The biggest advantage is that henna powder comes in individual sachets. This means you don't need to open a bottle, which can affect the powder's shelf life. With a single sachet, I usually get 5 treatments. By working economically, you can even do 10 treatments with one sachet. This immediately reduces the cost of a treatment. I seal the sachet with a piece of tape, which keeps the powder fresh for about two more weeks."

Easy Preparation

"Another big advantage is that you mix the powder with water (or rose water). Add a few drops with a pipette, stir it with an angled brush, and it’s ready to use!"

What are the disadvantages of henna eyebrow dye?

Volatile Powder and Possible Allergies

"A practical downside is that henna powder can become volatile when you shake it out of the sachet. That's why I always use a protective pad underneath my workspace to avoid staining surfaces. If powder falls on the table or another surface, it can be hard to remove without leaving marks. I also prepare all my supplies before each treatment: mixing bowl, angled brush, powder, pipette, and rose water to fill the pipette. I also use mousse and scrub to clean the brows, brow paste to outline them, and a tint remover for emergencies."

"Another downside is that the skin can react allergically to the PPD dye. This substance is present in all types of hair dyes, so there's always a risk of such a reaction with brow or hair dyes. That’s why I always perform a patch test and inform my clients about the possibility of an allergic reaction. Fortunately, these reactions are rare, but it's good to know in advance to avoid doing the treatment and opt for another option."

What materials are needed for brow tinting?

Protect your workspace and clothing

"Before starting the treatment, I place a disposable towel on the client’s chest to protect their clothing. I always wear an apron and disposable nitrile gloves to protect my hands. First, I clean the skin with brow mousse, then I treat the brows with a gentle scrub and enzyme peel to remove dead skin cells. Next, I discuss with the client how they want their brows shaped and outline them with brow mapping thread. I then apply alcohol with a cotton pad to degrease the brows and skin to ensure the henna adheres well. I use a brow pencil or paste to outline the shape and protect the skin. After that, I style and shape the brows. Then it’s time to mix and apply the dye. If I go outside the lines, I remove the excess dye immediately with a dry cotton swab. Once the dye is absorbed, I gently remove the remainder with a damp cotton pad. If anything is outside the lines, I clean it with a cotton pad soaked in dye remover."

Why use water instead of an oxidant?

Less risk of skin irritation

"Henna is a natural product. By mixing the powder with just a few drops of water (or rose water), you create a paste. No chemical process is necessary before the dye is ready to use. With regular eyebrow tints like RefectoCil and Godefroy, you need an oxidant to make the dye ready for use."

Why do you use rose water?

Better adhesion of the henna dye

"Rose water activates the henna for brows thanks to the rose extracts. It prolongs the results by providing better adhesion and has moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects. I can really see a difference in the result."

Do you have the right color for every client?

Dare to mix

"I do well with the 8 colors from Marie-José. If one of the standard colors doesn’t quite match, I mix two colors."

Can you guarantee how long the dye lasts on the skin?

Skin type and cosmetic use are key factors

"No! The duration of the dye on the skin depends on the client’s skin type and aftercare. With oily skin, the dye may not adhere well and may last for a shorter period. If I see that a client has oily skin, I immediately tell them that the result may not last as long as expected. I also advise clients to use as few greasy products as possible, like most cosmetics, on or around the brows. It’s also important to keep the brows dry for 24 hours after the treatment and avoid too much sun exposure."

Do you always get an even result with henna for brows?

Use a brow scrub

"For the best results, I exfoliate the skin beforehand to remove dead skin cells. However, in some cases, like scarring, the dye may not adhere well in certain areas. For an even look, I use a brow powder, which clients can easily apply at home."

How much do you charge for a henna brow treatment?

1 Euro per minute

"A henna treatment takes longer than a regular brow tint. I call it a brow treatment because I do a scrub, shaping, and of course, dyeing the skin. This makes it a detailed and relatively long treatment. I think a good rule is to charge at least 25% more for a henna brow treatment than for other tinting methods. Since it takes about 30 minutes, I charge around 30 euros."
